Pitlane brilliance and a storming drive revive BJR’s Friday in Townsville

Bryce Fullwood has converted some great qualifying pace to a top five finish in Race 20 on the streets of Townsville.

Fullwood in the Mr Umami Racing Camaro made his way into the second stanza of qualifying, putting the #14 machine 8th on the grid.

With 14 laps to go, Fullwood was called to pitlane for four tyres and sent on his way, the lightning fast stop earnt the North Territorian a few on track positions.

And then as the race played out, he was able to pull himself up to fifth.

Andre Heimgartner meanwhile found himself on a charge after his four tyre stop.

The Kiwi rounded up three cars in two laps to come across the line in 11th in the R&J Batteries entry.

The Pizza Hut Racing crew had a tough qualifying session and weren’t able to get the best lap together, however the car was stronger in the race.

Macauley Jones was able to move forward and gain some momentum over the 35 laps, taking the flag in 19th.

It was another tough day in the car for Jaxon Evans, who had wheel-to-wheel contact with another car on lap 1.

There was damage to the front suspension and from there his race was over.

The team were able to fix the front left corner and send him back out for a few laps, but he recorded a DNF.

BJR will be back on track tomorrow for Race 21 qualifying at 10:00am AEST.

Super2

A mixed bag of results for the Super2 duo after two practice sessions here in Townsville.

Brad Vaughan was quick to find some speed finishing the first session in 7th.

Unfortunately in the second session the #80 Dormer HVAC Services ZB Commodore driver lost his left-rear wheel while exiting the pits.

The BJR team pushed him back into the lane where they repaired any damage before sending the 21-year-old out on track to set the fastest lap of the session.

Meanwhile Cody Gillis will be doing his homework tonight to find speed around the Reid Park circuit.

The karting star will look over the data with the team after finishing the two sessions in 16th and 21st respectively.

Times are tight and both boys are eager to qualify tomorrow morning at 9:25 AEST.

SUPERCARS QUOTEBOARD

Andre Heimgartner
Supercars driver, #8 R&J Batteries Camaro

“Not a terrible day. We ended up just outside the top ten in 11th. Managed to salvage something from the qualifying result. The car wasn't too bad. Tomorrow, I guess the focus is to qualify higher, try and get ourselves in the ten, or up the front so then we don't have to do the hard work in the race. Overall, happy with today.”

Bryce Fullwood
Supercars driver, #14 Mr Umami Racing Camaro

“Really good day here for us in the Mr Umami #14 Camaro. Really good fun. We qualified eighth but I feel like we probably had a little bit more speed than that. Reasonably happy with that and then was able to race forward. Car was really good and the boys did a wicked stop. Big shout out to our pit crew who absolutely crushed it. We were able to move up and finish fifth. So really happy with that. Super excited to go racing again tomorrow.”

Macauley Jones
Supercars driver, #96 Pizza Hut Racing Camaro

“Bit of an average day today. Got a bit lost with the balance. The qualifying car was really difficult. It’s always difficult when you get one set of tyres and one lap. We made some spots up in the race which is obviously the shorter style race today. Just got to figure out a few things with the driving style and hopefully qualify better tomorrow.”

Jaxon Evans
Supercars driver, #12 SCT Motorsport Camaro

“The day could have gone better. We struggled in qualifying and put ourselves down the back. Had a bit of trouble at the start of the race and copped some damage. The boys worked hard but I couldn't get back out there. Hoping for a better day tomorrow.”

SUPER2 QUOTEBOARD

Cody Gillis
Super2 driver, #9 TropicPetroleum ZB Commodore

“Tough day. Pretty promising to see Brad was so fast today. Will obviously look at the data overnight and Brads onboards and that's all we can really do. Obviously, he was P1 so we've got all his data and footage to go over. We’ll look at look at that tonight and hopefully come out firing in the morning.”

Brad Vaughan
Super2 driver, #80 Dormer HVAC ZB Commodore

“I'm actually excited because I was fastest in that last session. So really, really good day. Fastest in the last session but not without its dramas. We had a wheel fall off, which was a bit interesting. So sat there for 10 minutes while we got pushed back, and then the car was a rocket ship. So, looking forward to tomorrow.”
