THE RECAP AND WORD FROM NICK
Ipswich turned on another day of sunshine for the opening SuperSprint race of the weekend at Queensland Raceway. Nick impressed in the Hare and Forbes Supercar in qualifying, topping the times in the first session. He narrowly missed moving forward into the final qualifying session by only 0.04 of a second, so was set to start from 11th.
All the drivers got a clean start to the race, with a few passing moves in the opening laps before the pit stops began. Nick was in the early group to complete their pit stops, so would have a longer drive to the finish line.
After the drivers completed their pit stops, Nick was up inside the top ten in position 8. It was a twenty-lap dash to the finish, with tyre management the focus for drivers. Those on the fresher tyres would be making a charge, and those on older tyres would be all about defending position.
Nick was able to press on in the final laps and returned to form, finishing back inside the top ten with a result of 8th. Today’s result brings confidence to the Hare & Forbes team ahead of tomorrows’ final 200km race at the Ipswich ‘paperclip’ circuit.
“We were very close to getting inside that ten in qualifying, but a bit of traffic saw me unable to maximise a fast lap in the Hare & Forbes Supercar.”
“I got a good start to todays’ 120km race. I knew the car was strong in the opening laps and that we could go aggressive with the strategy and pit early; which we did. The Hare & Forbes Supercar looked after its tyres really well so we sat in a pretty comfortable spot all race.”
“I could see the battle pack behind me towards the end of the race between Slade, Reynolds, Courtney and Coulthard. It looked like that was where a lot of the action was in those final laps! I only got to see a snippet of it, but I’m sure it was a good show for those watching trackside or at home!”
